wash me in the tide
lose me in your flow
that my days may ebb
and your light rises
in my darkest times
let the wind carry me
as it would a whisper
surrender me to the dream
of a lost island paradise
where i may sweep ashore
and finally dream no more

what is reality?

this was something i researched for myself awhile ago. At first the question, I had thought, was quite simple. A plain, straight-forward question that deserved a likewise honest answer.

As I began to research the answer deeper, it was somewhat ironic that the intensity of the research brought me back to the source. What was I asking, what was the question? Ok i kind of had an idea of what i was asking, or what i hoped the answer would be. And i tried to piece the question together and try to construct and formulate it. And thus in researching the question the answer became clearer and eventually subtly obvious.

SO let us begin with analysing our question. a simple, single sentence query containing only 3 words and a question mark.
What is reality?

-----------------

what

Pronunciation: /wɒt/
pronoun
1 [interrogative pronoun] asking for information specifying something: what is your name? I’m not sure what you mean
determiner
1 [interrogative determiner] asking for information specifying something: what time is it? do you know what excuse he gave?

is

Pronunciation: /ɪz/
third person singular present of be.

reality

Pronunciation: /rɪˈalɪti/
noun (plural realities)
[mass noun]
1the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them: he refuses to face reality Laura was losing touch with reality
[count noun] a thing that is actually experienced or seen, especially when this is unpleasant: the harsh realities of life in a farming community
[count noun] a thing that exists in fact, having previously only existed in one’s mind: we want to make the dream a reality
the quality of being lifelike: the reality of Marryat’s detail
[as modifier] relating to reality TV: a reality show
2the state or quality of having existence or substance: youth, when death has no reality
Philosophy existence that is absolute, self-sufficient, or objective, and not subject to human decisions or conventions.

Origin:
late 15th century: via French from medieval Latin realitas, from late Latin realis 'relating to things' (see real1)

hmmmm ok lets think about it again
lets re-read it a few times and think about it a little bit more.

In the original essay thesis of this i have delved alot more in depth into the entire philosophy and psychological attributes of differing debates of the question, but nevertheless lets start at the beginning again.

the first half of our string is;... 'what is'
what is - of what, object, determiner, the question,

what is - is a fact - it has no exceptions and is independent of being perceived to exist.

The fact that our known universe has only four dimensions and that many professionals openly state that there is almost certainly many more, only the amount derives controversy. Our most ultimate decider upon our reality and probably to all that is real is down to perception. One looks and the other is seen. have i lost you yet? trust me alice the rabbit-hole does spiral down forever.

Reality can exist without being perceived
ie: a room full of furniture (symbolic of reality being all that is in the room)
A person walks into the room while it is unlit, to the beholder the entire room would seem empty and void-less. The argument would be that the objects in that room did not cease to exist when there was no light for if the person had motioned forward certainty would always, according to murphy's law, dictate that chances are they are going to stub their toe on something and result in quite profanely cursing whatever it was that existed in that dark place to cause such displeasure to their senses (perception)

therefore reality can obviously exist independant of perception

If we try and calibrate the mathematical equation for the question as simply as possible we could possibly simply just use the question mark. It could be recorded as the shortest sentence ever

?

or maybe not, we are not that naive, and in our lust for simplicity we must not forget substance, for without substance nothing has value. therefore let us give reality a mathematical value. let us give our subject, reality, the annotation of y
therefore the equation becomes slightly more complex

y = ?

If we can argue that the first half of our original question of 'what is reality' was to succeed in identifying the complete ingredients of reality, and we can argue that 'what is' is universal and undebatable as being real. let us then give the object of the question the symbol x

x = what is

now we can inadvertently and immediately see a paradox because

y = x

reality = what is

what is = reality

let us analyse what is again quickly. All that ever existed, be it a thought, a dream, made of matter, or not made of matter, any concept, any dimension and ultimately infinity itself. Infinity is a recognised mathematical value ∞

--------------------------

infinity noun
[U] time or space that has no end

the infinity of the universe

the concept of infinity
[U] a point which is so far away that it cannot be reached

figurative The mountain range stretched away into infinity.

[U] a number that is larger than all other numbers

[S] an extremely large number of something

an infinity of stars in the galaxy

-------------------

now keeping our question and equation in mind while still trying to keep the entire formula as simple as possible, what is, being x would include the concept of mathematical infinity ∞

therefore: y = x + ∞

reality = what is and infinity

reality is infinite

therefore the ultimate answer to our simple equation and question 'what is reality' would eventually end in the answer of infinity. Not because we are unable to calculate the answer due to our inability nor because we can not perceive it but rather because of it's perfect nature to be infinite. There have been many schools of philosophy and science that believed in a ultimate universe and there are many theories over it and many theories and infinite amount of theories in direct opposition and naturally you can guess it alice, we are back down in the rabbit hole.

Einstein had offered that it was possible that the universe was of a spherical nature. If we return again to the beginning and re-analyse our original question what is reality, keeping in mind that 'what is' is the object of the sentence and reality is the subject. We are asking no more of the subject than its form and dimensions and in such it's shape. There are other professional opinions of the shape of the universe that include curvature. Some theories propose donut shapes but the most predominant is perhaps the helix shape that ironically looks similar to the shape of the infinity sign and dna.
